The Erhu – China's Haunting two String Fiddle comes to Broadway
I felt touched, but able to express in words. It seemed like listening to a story that moves every part of my heart. I also wanted to ask, what happened? When the music ended.
That's how I felt when Ms. Qi Xiaochun played her instrument, the erhu, a spectacular Chinese New Year, sponsored by New Tang Dynasty Television (NTDTV) last January.
The Erhu, also known in the West as the Chinese violin or Chinese two-string fiddle, is a two-stringed bowed musical instrument. Instrument seems so simple that even tried to build an Erhu when I was about 12 years. Of course, the sound quality was not good at all, but I really loved for a while '.
The erhu can be traced back to instruments introduced into more than a thousand years ago China. Became popular in southern China during the Sung Dynasty (960-1279 AD), which was called "Nan-hu", Nan in southern China.
Today erhu often plays an important role in national orchestras. In smaller orchestras, there are usually two to six players erhu in larger, 10 to 12. In fact, in the orchestras of China, the erhu plays the violin in orchestras non-Western. Like the Western violin, the erhu is known for his emotions and is often said to echo the human voice.
Growing up in Shanghai, Ms. Qi began learning to play this difficult instrument, at the age of six years by a friend of his father. Later was accepted into the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and won a prize in the national Chinese erhu. He also played the Hollywood Bowl, but his most memorable performances have been in network New Tang Dynasty Television (NTDTV) Chinese New Year show.
In addition to performing, Ms. Qi also teaches the erhu. "When learning to play the erhu," she says, "people must first develop the basic skills. The music, however, comes from the character of the person. People carry their things in music. What I want to express, in addition to the person as a whole, is expressed through music. As an artist, your moral character will also determine your skill. "
This idea is reflected throughout the ancient Chinese culture, whether in painting, martial arts, or poetry, to cultivate the talent, we must cultivate the whole person. Ms. Qi is this philosophy is also present in NTDTV shows. It is hoped that when people watch the show is not only fun but also something about the experience of the deeper qualities that these arts in China can bring to people. According to Ms. Qi, is simple: "pure compassion, pure beauty."
Ms. Qi Xiaochun perform the erhu in Holiday Wonders at the Beacon Theater, Broadway, 19-24 December, and in 2007 the NTDTV Chinese New Year spectacular shows that are touring North America from January to March 2007. http://shows. NTDTV. com
